Hier geht’s zu: Raskasta Joulua – ein finnisches Weihnachtsmärchen
“Christmas truly is the time of miracles”, Erkka Korhonen states in a post thanking audience, musicians, and all helping hands enabling the Christmas concert of Raskasta Joulua in Finland becoming a story of success. The big success is the result of hard work, careful planning and taking risks but perhaps most of all believing in the concept of the shows.
The story started thirteen years ago and by then today’s reality seemed no more than a dream or faint hope. Obscuro.cz presented the history of the concerts in four-parts interview with Erkka Korhonen, head, heart, hand and lead guitarist of Raskasta Joulua. A couple of very popular singers have been part of the project from the very beginning on, such as Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot). There is even a spin-off, called the Northern Kings who released two albums with unique cover versions of 1980’s pop songs, although my personal favourite one is the cover of Frank Sonatra’s “My Way” (1969). The voices of Marco Hietala, Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), JP Leppäluoto (Charon/Poisonblack) and Jarkko Ahola (Teräsbetoni/J Ahola) make an incredible mix and many songs have a completley own spirit.

Speaking of Jarkko Ahola, I feel the need to sort out a point that has been understood differently by numerous reader than I meant it. I have met Jarkko several times as a fan. And being in personal contact with his fans means the world to him. He even tends to push his colleagues to do likewise, I experienced personally. So for example he literally showed up out of thin air after a show. He addressed my friend me first by asking how we liked the show. Jarkko stayed for a relaxed conversation! He takes his time to sign autographs and photos with the fans, speaks with them. And that’s just the way he is!
Jarkko has not been touring with Raskasta Joulua for several years but still is part of the line-up. He has become an established singer exceeding the metal genres. Jarkko has achieved a vast and loyal fan base by doing all kinds of music from big band to classical Christmas concerts in churches. But then like Erkka said in summer: „He is selling good. I am actually happy for him that he is doing well. I don’t want people to get me wrong but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was something ticking in his head about: Is this really what I want to do? Would I rather be doing something else? Very important question.“
In the meantime, Raskasta Joulua has come to its greatest success ever. ‘Hartwall Arena sold out’ was the headline two weeks ago. Hartwall Arena (the biggest indoor venue in Finland) in Helsinki is the natural habitat for ice hockey or mega stars such as Metallica or Iron Maiden. And I remember how proud Erkka was being able to play a Raskasta Joulua gig there. His eyes shone like the sun saying he needed to take a photo from their advert at the venue. Now they compete (in numbers) with the biggest fish.

But that’s not all. The current album, “IV”, released only on November 17th, made it to the top of the Finnish charts: in selling physical copies as much as in total sales! Weird enough that the physical copies of their albums are selling much better than physical copies do nowadays in general. Once more I remember the child-like happiness speaking of the moment when Erkka learned about the 2013 album broke the platinum barrier. He – representing all the envolved musicians – must be bursting with joy.
The ongoing 2017 tour presents an incredible line up and this year, for the first time there are two guest stars adding to the list of big names: Joe Lynn Turner and Tarja Turunen. And yes, this means that there will be four shows presenting the former Nightwish band mates Tarja and Marco on one stage together again. “Never say never”, Erkka said in summer obviously not shy of at least trying to make the impossible happen.
We all know too many stories of extremely talented musicians working hard to achieve some success and never make it beyond the local pub stages. The more pleasure it is to witness of this true Christmas story.

“Weihnachten ist wirklich die Zeit der Wunder”, schreibt Erkka Korhonen in einem Facebook-Post, in dem er sich bei den Fans, Musikern und all den helfenden Händen bedankt, die die Weihnachtskonzerte von Raskasta Joulua zum Erfolg geführt haben. Zu großem Erfolg, der das Resultat harter Arbeit, vorausschauender Planung, dem Eingehen von Risiken und vielleicht am meisten dem Glauben in das Konzept der Shows ist.
Die Geschichte begann vor 13 Jahren und was heute Wahrheit ist erschien damals ein Traum oder bestenfalls eine vage Hoffnung. Obscuro.cz hat ein vierteiliges Interview mit Erkka Korhonen gemacht, dem Macher, Kopf, Herz und Leadgitarristen von Raskasta Joulua. Einige große Namen sind seit Anbeginn mit von der Partie, so wie Marco Hietala (Nightwish/Tarot). Es gibt sogar ein spin-off, eine Coverband namens Northern Kings. Sie haben zwei Alben veröffentlicht, auf denen im wesentlichen Cover-Versionen von 80er Jahre Popsongs zu hören sind, auch wenn mein persönlicher Favorit das Cover von Frank Sinatra’s „My Way“ ist, dass bereits 1969 im Original veröffentlicht wurde. Die Stimmen der Northern Kings sind neben der von Marco Hietala auch die von Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica), JP Leppäluoto (Charon/Poisonblack) und Jarkko Ahola (Teräsbetoni/J Ahola), welche den Liedern oft einen ganz eigenen Charakter verleihen.

Wo wir gerade bei Jarkko Ahola sind. Ich halte es für wichtig mit einem Missverständnis aus dem Interview aufzuräumen. Ich habe Jarkko einige Male persönlich getroffen – als Fan. Der persönliche Kontakt mit seinen Fans ist ihm extrem wichtig. Um nicht zu sagen, dass er ggf. auch seine Kollegen dazu motiviert nach der Show zum Meet & Greet zu erscheinen. Einmal zum Beispiel ist Jarkko aus dem Nichts hinter meiner Begleitung und mir aufgetaucht nach einer Show und fragte uns, wie wir sie fanden. Eine entspannte Unterhaltung entstand. Er gibt gerne Autogramme und nimmt sich Zeit für gemeinsame Fotos. So ist er eben!
Jarkko hat Raskasta Joulua in den letzten Jahren nicht auf Tournee begleiten können, ist aber nach wie vor Mitglied der Band. Er hat sich als Sänger mit einem den Rahmen des Metal-Bereichs deutlich übersteigenden Repertoire etabliert und sich damit eine sehr große Fangemeinde erarbeitet. Er macht von Big Band bis hin zu klassischen Weihnachtskonzerten in Kirchen so einiges. Aber dann ist es halt auch so wie Erkka im Sommer im Interview sagte: „Er verkauft gut. Ich bin happy, dass es ihm so gut geht. Nicht, dass mich jemand falsch versteht, aber ich wäre nicht überrascht, wenn in seinem Kopf die Frage tickt, ob das wirklich das ist, was er machen will. ‘Oder würde ich vielleicht lieber etwas anderes machen?’ Eine sehr wichtige Frage.“
In der Zwischenzeit sind Raskasta Joulua am bisherigen Höhepunkt ihres Erfolges angekommen. „Hartwall-Arena ausverkauft“ lautete die Nachricht vor etwa zwei Wochen. Die Hartwall-Arena ist die größte Konzerthalle in Finnland. Sie ist das natürliche Habitat von Eishockeyteams und Megastars wie Metallica oder Iron Maiden. Und ich erinnere mich gerne, wie stolz Erkka im Sommer erzählt hat, dass er noch an der Halle vorbeischauen muss, um ein Foto der riesigen Raskasta Joulua-Anzeige dort zu machen. Jetzt konkurrieren sie (wenigstens zahlenmäßig) mit den größten Fischen.

Aber das ist nicht alles. Das aktuelle Album, „IV“, wurde erst am 17. November veröffentlicht und hat es bereits an die Spitze der finnischen Charts geschafft. Und das sowohl im Verkauf von Tonträgern als auch im Gesamtverkauf (also inkl. digitaler Medien)! Schon verrückt irgendwie, dass sie ihre Alben als klassische Tonträger heutzutage besser verkaufen als digital. Und wieder erinnere ich mich an die kindliche Freude in Erkkas Gesicht, als er mir erzählte, wie er 2013 die Nachricht erhielt, dass das damalige Album Platin erreicht habe. Er muss – stellvertretend für alle beteiligten Musiker – vor Freude platzen.
Die bereits laufende Tournee 2017 präsentiert neben dem ohnehin schon großartigen Line Up auch erstmalig zwei Gäste. Mit Joe Lynn Turner und Tarja Turunen stehen zwei international mehr als renommierte Namen mehr auf der Liste. Und ja, das bedeutet, dass es im Rahmen der vier gemeinsamen Shows jeweils ein gemeinsames Duett von Tarja und Marco geben wird! Wer hätte das gedacht? „Sag niemals nie“, hatte Erkka im Sommer gesagt und hat offenbar keine Angst davor wenigstens zu versuchen, das Unmögliche möglich zu machen.
Wir alle kennen mehr als genug Geschichten von extrem talentierten und sehr hart arbeitenden Musikern, die nie mehr erreichen, als ein paar Auftritte in den Kneipen der Nachbarschaft. Umso mehr Freude macht es mir, dieses wahr gewordene Weihnachtsmärchen zu erzählen.
