Heavy Metal Maniac, that’s what Marko Syrjala, bass player of Evil Drive calls himself. And considering the dedication it takes to run a metal band, make albums, play shows and achieve some success, the term maniac is merely more than one angle on many metal band stories. Perhaps being a maniac to some extended is needed to make it work, right? Evil Drive are a Melo Death Metal band from the very south of Finland, which only recently signed with Reaper Entertainment. Viktoria Viren and her band mates, Ville Viren (gui), Juha-Pekka Pusa (gui), Marko Syrjala (bass), Juha Beck (dr),…

Perhaps this is not a common interview. But then the Dark River Festival (DRF) was not a common festival experience to me. Henri Eerola, the festival and social media manager, said it is like a class reunion and coming home. His comparison fits in more than one way. The crew running the festival has been the same for many years, musicians and band have played there before and enjoyed coming back and the audience is the most critical you can have, with parents and friends among them. So besides Henri I asked some of the musicians about their Dark River…

Sometimes when you meet a band you have an idea what will happen. Sometimes not at all. You prepare your questions and you look forward to have a good time or an interesting, deep-going conversation or get some hard business facts. And at some very rare occasions you get that all when expected none of it! You were not really confident how to get the conversation running, perhaps. But then we’re speaking here of Turmion Katilöt, a band that for me more than any other never fits in any box. They are unique in the very best sense of the…

Meeting Jon Schaffer was special to me. I have listened to his music for 15 or even 20 years now. And then he surprised me with some very personal replies on the band history, its dynamics and his attitude towards metal. It’s a brutally hot summer day in the remote scenery of rural German countryside – Rock Am Stück – as I meet Jon Schaffer, head composer, guitarist, and well, simply the mastermind of Iced Earth. The band has played quite a few festivals in Europe already this summer and some club gigs in between. I wonder if he still…

There have been quite some changes in Barren Earth lately either within the band line up or affecting the band dynamics. When there was never a doubt that Kreator would limit Sami’s [Yli-Sirniö, guitar] availability for Barren Earth the question arose how Oppu’s [Olli-Pekka Laine, bass] return to Amorphis would affect the band. And then of course already the tour with Insomnium and Wolfheart back in January 2017 brought more new faces on stage as for example due to Marko’s child being born not long before so his family had priority. So how are things right now with Barren Earth?…

Their latest album ‘Into the Pitch Black’ is a master piece being highly appreciated by fans and reviewers. The lyrics, mostly written by vocalist Eemeli Bodde, often deal with some kind of disappointment in recent social structures and developments. Yet there always is hope Mika Lammassaari points out even stronger than Eemeli who joins our interview later. The first time I met Mika was after a Wolfheart show quite some time back. He looked at the collage, I asked the band to sign and the first thing he said was how happy he was to find a good photo of…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdTLpCHsiOE Know the feeling you know some band before anyone else do? Wonderful! I love that feeling so much, I spent my time eagerly searching for new and unknown bands and than enjoy watching their rise. I’m not talking falls now. The advantage new bands have is that they are easily approachable and they radient joy form what they create. And this is twice as true when it comes to Finnish bands. Musicians are even more open and nice than one would believe. And they are very patient as well. This interview took place early in the spring…

Heavy Muumi Rock or mostly knows as HM Rock has become one of the most popular faces at the legendary Finnish midsummer metal festival: Nummirock. We followed the little one on his journey their and enjoyed his adventures on festival. But then who is Muumi and who is HM Rock? Osbscuro asked our foreign editor Ms Cesar Little. MsCL: “You know it is a bit like a fairy fale: Once upon a time on tiny island in the Baltic Sea a grand lady came up with the stories taking place in Muumi Valley. Muumi and his family lived in blue…

To us metal lovers from Central Europe, Finland often seem to be the promised land of heavy music, satisfying our hunger for melancholic, dark or even blackest tunes with a never ending flow of new bands. This is all the more interesting as the metal scene of our Northern neighbours is quite young – at least compared to that of England, for example. And while most of us might be aware to some extend at least about the Black Metal evolution including its, let’s say side effects, in Norway, what do we know of the origins of Finnish Black Metal…

Like a tornado the new song “Dead Like Silence” from Post Pulse kicks off. Nothing of silence in here. Not all. But then again who needs silence if you can have the growls and screams of Mikko Kotamäki (Swallow the Sun), Otto Aleksanteri Eräjoki (Mørket), Niko Kalliojärvi (Humavoid), and Sami Silvennoinen (Skein) adding to Doe‘s [Tapani Rantanen]? It’s Friday night and I sit at home chatting with a young musician I met only recently. While we discuss the essential role of networking the timeline shows a new video of my Finnish, former interviewees from Post Pulse. And how fitting it…
