Dragonforce @ Substage, Karlsruhe, 7.2.2020 It’s a rather cold and uncomfortable February day when people start queuing up at the entrance of the Substage in Karlsruhe and the reason is well known for spectacular high-speed guitar solos, to say so, the fastest band of the universe with an average of 200 bpm during their songs. Some people are also curious because they will present a new bass player. Anyway, let’s wait (in the cold) and see (in the warmth of the venue) … The Substage is located in Karlsruhe Oststadt, not too far away from the motorway A5, at the…

An updated review is availabe on obscuro.eu Dorja Dreikönigskeller Frankfurt, 20.2.2020 It’s the evening of Carnival Thursday, better known as “Altweiberfasching” in Germany when people start to gather in a little dead end street next to the shores of the river Main, a bit cold but at least not raining … Dreikönigskeller The Dreikönigskeller is located in Frankfurt Brückenviertel, next to the Eiserne Steg with a direct view over the Main. It is a tiny venue, very cozy, not much more than the stage and the bar with a little space for the audience. To say so, it has the…

“Macro” is consequentially the name of the just released album following JINJER’s recent EP “Micro”. An album considered Djent or Progressive in any way is hardly trivial enough to make a relaxing background entertainment for office work but perhaps your kickboxing workout. And yet this could not at all be an adequate approach to JINJER’s music. “Macro” demands the listener’s complete and undivided attention which is the key to open the portal into their world of multi-layered arrangements, complex and yet harmonic tunes, an abundance of deepest emotions, groovy bass lines, hardest drumming and last but certainly not least Tatiana’s…

Review by Saber One thing is for certain…the fans are in for a treat! Everyone who knows Mayhem should know by now that they can’t be put into a box. The band of course has it’s roots in the dark forests of Norwegian black metal, along with the history that gave birth to the genre. Nothing can ever change that…but if you think that makes them predictable, you’re dead wrong! I imagine that those who stay in dark cold corners judging themselves to be the definition of “kvlt” or “trve” will complain, just as they always do anyway. Aside from…

The Dark River Festival is the kymiest festival there is, they say. The venue near the Kymijoki is located in the Finnish Kymenlaakso which is as much the valley as the county. It is the only spot in the world the Dark River Festival (DRF) crew can think of to have this festival. I learned that this festival is really different (see interview with Henri Eerola). Bands love to return to the ‘kymiest’ stage and the ‘kymiest’ crew, said the musicians I asked. So do the fans.  What’s pulling not the moths to the light but the metalheads to the…

A raw and snotty or a homage to Judas Priest Roughly two years back a band asked if obscuro.cz were reviewing unsigned bands. Soon Ms Cesar Little met their Lone Gunmen’s vocalist Hendrik and their guitarist Robin for a very inspiring conversation on their EP ‚Dawn‘, their music in general, influences, the topics of their lyrcis and whatnot. Lone Gunmen (Hendrik Noack [vocals], Stefan Riesz [bass], Robin Görss [guitars], Marius Müller [drums]) see themselves as a Groove Metal band and have just released their first full-length album, called ‘Lead Skies’. I began listening and writing and enjoying their style which…

A Rough and Diverse Sound Crawling Its Way Under Your Skin Review by Cat Maverick (aka Bastian Blessing) A few weeks ago I visited the second Metal Crane Festival in Helsinki. The festival – just like my whole trip to Finland – was a unique and overwhelming experience, which is why I decided to write an article about it and tell the world (see). Before the festival, most of the band names on the lineup were unknown to me, including Medeia. My mentor (Ms Cesar Little) asked me to pick my favorite bands of the festival to be included as…

Recently the second Metal Crane Festival led me to Finland for the very first time. Initially prepared for the cold north, I was thawed by quite the warm welcome. Even more so, as the crowd and the bands in Helsinki’s famous Nosturi were really hot. The Nosturi is a more than remarkable venue: a multi-floored, formerly commercial metal construction situated in the onetime industrial harbour surrounded by a wood of cranes, hosting a restaurant, the concert venue and countless rehearsal facilities of bands, some of them very well-known. Perfect venue for the Metal Crane Festival! Friday Night – Antithesis Of…

Metallijate (Ville Mussallo, Mikko Heikkilä and Antti Rantavuo) means metallic garbage. T(h)rash metal? Anyway you will meet the word written on containers wherever you go in Finland. Downtown. In a suburbian living area. In a park. On the beach. On a parking lot along the road. Even on a trail in the middle of nowhere in the loneliness of Lapland. The newly established band has not made it this far yet. Meeting Ville and Mikko in a gloomy bar below the famous Nosturi concert venue in Helsinki, Mikko tells me how it all began: With a photo of exactly such…

Like a tornado the new song “Dead Like Silence” from Post Pulse kicks off. Nothing of silence in here. Not all. But then again who needs silence if you can have the growls and screams of Mikko Kotamäki (Swallow the Sun), Otto Aleksanteri Eräjoki (Mørket), Niko Kalliojärvi (Humavoid), and Sami Silvennoinen (Skein) adding to Doe‘s [Tapani Rantanen]? It’s Friday night and I sit at home chatting with a young musician I met only recently. While we discuss the essential role of networking the timeline shows a new video of my Finnish, former interviewees from Post Pulse. And how fitting it…
