Now that was a long festival day! We started roughly at noon and returned home only after sunrise, literally. Blasting gigs, passionate interviewees, meeting lots of cool folks on the venue and all this free of rain. It feels hard to make a cut what to write and what not. Ok, the inteviews. There was a lot of input and some really intense conversations on bridging genres in music, an in-depth introduction of a very tradional instrument, its current rise in the music scene and how it is technically further developed – speaking with Pekko Käppi! There was a relaxed…

When I listened to this line of Omnium Gatherum’s „Rejuvenate!“ it stuck in my memory and popped up again and again from time to time. Just like this morning while taking a sighing look on today’s Tuska schedule. ‚Bull…‘ I thought. ‚There’ll be hardly a break not to think of break long enough to take meal anytime inbetween …‘ So I wondered on which criteria I would decide whom to see and whom not to attend. Whom only to give a short glance taking some photos and sparing some as it is. My particular inner conflict tonight would be -…

Finally: approaching Helsinki the very day the Heatseeker at Tavastia will start the Tuska Open Air marathon and this on a sunny day!!! After all the rain and cold of the Nummirock weekend, you might imagine this add remarkably to my excitement! The line up is amazing and we have spoken of that plenty of times. So let’s focus on what is coming for my dear obscuro readers. And this is very exclusive stuff because I managed to make several appointments with musicians based in or near Helsinki yet not being in the line up. Still there is so much…

Only two more days left before the gates to one of the most traditional clubs, the Tavastia, in Helsinki open for the Tuska warm up event, the Pre Party. Here we will see Antony Parviainen and his energetic Band Psychework again. And no doubt they will fuel the Helsinki party people as much as they did just a few days ago at Nummirock. Speaking of those bands we will see once more, I am also happy to get a second chance for a Vorna gig. Perhpas just one week ago I had said, what a pitty they just play at…

The line up of the Tuska festival is amazing. It is vast. It is huge. It is overwhelming. And even more, the party seems to find no end. Imagine, after a long, long festival day in Suvilahti the festival area will close at 1:00 am. But this is only closing time there! Literally! Because the parties, namely the After Show parties at Virgin Oil downtown Helsinki will have just begun to boil! Even before the festival will actually start, there is going to be a Pre Party at one of the most traditional clubs in Helsinki: the Tavastia! Door opening…

The clock is ticking and Tuska is approaching – so let’s take a look at the line up. Udo Dirkschneider will be there! I just saw him in a music video in memoriam of someone who is perhaps rather unknown beyond Finland, perhaps even beyond Kuopio – although he played at Tuska several times: Pecu Cinnari. There will not be too many of yours who have heard of the metal veterans of Tarot, a band whose roots lead us back into the late 70s. By that time, the brothers Marco (bass and vocals) and Zachary Hietala (guitar) from Kuopio and…

The Tuska open air festival is celebrating its 20th birthday this summer, so this might be a good opportunity to look into its history. This first festival was an indoor-winter thing. And whom do we find among those pioneers of the line up? Trio Niskalaukaus, Barathum and Impaled Nazarene, who will be playing this time, too. Amazing! Once more the metal community seems to keep its members young at heart and young enough to rock a festival stage in the first days as much as on its 20th anniversary. Yeah! Many names have been loyal appearances on the Tuska stage,…

Good photos from a unique band are always worth the while. So I thought some memories on an earlier Apocalyptica tour might be a good preview for their Tuska gig to come in only a couple of weeks time from now. They were touring with the magnificent Tipe Johnson presenting their album 7th Symphony in 2011! All photos by Ms Cesar Little.

What have Mastodon, Mayhem and Mokoma in common? Nothing much?! The M in the beginning?! Oh, they have. They have, indeed. They will rock the stage at Suvilahti in Helsinki during the incredible Tuska festival! And just in the very unlikely case you’re not aware: TUSKA is THE festival in Helsinki this summer! From June, 30th to July 2nd Tuska presents an exceptionally well-chosen line up with highlights such as: Apocalyptica plays Metallica by four cellos, Dirkschneider, Soilwork, Sabaton, Devin Townsend Project and Anneke Van Giersbergen’s Vuur The Suvilahti festival is a very unique event as fans from all over…
