A raw and snotty or a homage to Judas Priest Roughly two years back a band asked if obscuro.cz were reviewing unsigned bands. Soon Ms Cesar Little met their Lone Gunmen’s vocalist Hendrik and their guitarist Robin for a very inspiring conversation on their EP ‚Dawn‘, their music in general, influences, the topics of their lyrcis and whatnot. Lone Gunmen (Hendrik Noack [vocals], Stefan Riesz [bass], Robin Görss [guitars], Marius Müller [drums]) see themselves as a Groove Metal band and have just released their first full-length album, called ‘Lead Skies’. I began listening and writing and enjoying their style which…

Squealer is a band founded long ago – all the way in to the heart of the kooky 1980s. Probably you have never heard of them before, probably you have and thought they’ve split ages ago or maybe you’ve seen them rocking the Caribbean cruise never knowing the long miles they’ve come. We, Raisa and Katja, met Lars for an interview and whole the band backstage on their anniversary gig – for which they invited the bands the local colleagues TonTourismus and the Czech friends Sebastien to share stage with them. Squealer – 35 years of metal “Lars, 35 years…

“Empath” – that’s Devin Townsend’s new album to be released tomorrow (March 29th) promoted by his tour beginning the very same day in Helsinki (tour dates here) ! Shows all over Europe follow, such as Thursday April 4th in Berlin or Saturday April 6th in Prague! In May and June he will conquer the stages in North America and return to Europe in November for more shows! Devin Townsend. I have never been a friend of genres and all the more names that simply exceed the dimension of this term by their unique style I find most inspiring. Devin Townsend…

I love festivals. I love metal festivals in particular. And most of all, I do love small metal festivals! How about you? Do you prefer the big, monstrous mega shows as that of Wacken or Nova-Rock? They come along with standing at the in-field gate for two hours waiting to be let in exactly at the last chords of the last  song of the one big name you have wanted to see all your life, watching the show from a spot 100 m off the stage and thus on one of these large screens supplying a perfect outdoor-TV feeling, walking…

Or A Gig Report: Beast in Black supported by Turmion Katilöt Winter 2019. Carnival. Downtown Frankfurt turned into a huge party area. Little off the city center in the legendary Batschkapp two Finnish bands are scheduled to play their shows. Beast in Black supported by Turmion Katilöt. It is the first headlining tour for Beast in Black promoting their second album “From Hell With Love”. This tour is a risky endeavour. Two bands only and none of which has much of reputation in continental Europe. Beast in Black has toured on German stages for the first time only 14 months…

During Nummirock 2017, VORNA invited me to meet them in their camp for a long and intensive interview (>>link). We spoke of their band dynamics, personalities that make the band; how they come up with new music; the role of their ‘seventh band member’ (actually their manager) and many things more. Recently we spoke again – little before their Metal Crane Festival show in the legendary Nosturi and met in a cozy venue office, the musicians snugly lying on comfy couches in an easy-going mood … VORNA only lately finished their work on album No 3 the release date of…

Recently the second Metal Crane Festival led me to Finland for the very first time. Initially prepared for the cold north, I was thawed by quite the warm welcome. Even more so, as the crowd and the bands in Helsinki’s famous Nosturi were really hot. The Nosturi is a more than remarkable venue: a multi-floored, formerly commercial metal construction situated in the onetime industrial harbour surrounded by a wood of cranes, hosting a restaurant, the concert venue and countless rehearsal facilities of bands, some of them very well-known. Perfect venue for the Metal Crane Festival! Friday Night – Antithesis Of…

Perhaps this is not a common interview. But then the Dark River Festival (DRF) was not a common festival experience to me. Henri Eerola, the festival and social media manager, said it is like a class reunion and coming home. His comparison fits in more than one way. The crew running the festival has been the same for many years, musicians and band have played there before and enjoyed coming back and the audience is the most critical you can have, with parents and friends among them. So besides Henri I asked some of the musicians about their Dark River…

It has always been this way, my mum used to reply too often when I asked her for the reason of things being a child still. I have thought 100.000 times of this phrase and most of the times it made me do things different because different is good. ‘Your interviews are different.’ I have heard this statement at least from nine out ten interviewees and it always meant a compliment. They enjoyed the interview, they have said. They said it was personal, very good, intensive, individual or many other things pointing out they really appreciated my way, and being…

Day One: The ‚Kymiest‘ Festival Ever „We say it’s the most kymi or kymiest festival of all“, someone from the crew explained me. Kymijoki is the river not far from the festival’s venue. Actually the whole area all the way from Kotka at the Baltic Sea up to Kouvula is named after the river, the Kymi Valley. There is a shuttle bus (16 seats) taking you from Kotka or Karhula to the venue which is in the [Biathlon] stadium of Honkala. So yes, Kotka is not Helsinki and the Honkala stadium is certainly not matching Hartwall arena. The road narrows…
