This lineup might confuse at first. Orchestral void and proggy tales – could that work? Indeed, it can. And it does here! The passion for dark soundscapes from three very different angles adds to a atmospheric beauty of a renaissance fresco in metal. A Tuesday might not be the perfect day to fill a venue for any lineup. And so – no surprise – it was not a sold-out show, but the crowd was quite decent in numbers, still! Actually that meant just enought space to mosh, and bang and drink a beer in between. The undiluted power of more…

A gloomy November night in Berlin … A very interesting line up will shred the stage of „Huxleys Neue Welt“, a very traditional venue in Berlin Neukölln. The Portuguese Prog Metal veterans Moonspell have brought the Black Metal masters Rotting Christ along and special guests from Switzerland, Silver Dust. Moonspell have passed into a legend status by now. Born in the wild 1990s their style has changed as often as the decades inbetween and yet evolved into a „clearly Moonspell“. The the whole concept of pressing bands into the boxes of genres, subgenres and sub-subgrenre is pellucitly absurd all the…

Text: Friend X Cellar Darling presented their recent album “The Spell” on a headlining tour supported by Oceans and Forever Still. Obscuro reports from their show in the stuffy cellar club Nachtleben in downtown Frankfurt back in October 2019. Is It Folk Metal Or Prog Metal? One does not need much to say when it comes to Cellar Darling. Three excellent and brilliant Swiss (and partly Irish) musicians and even more important, friends who already had a career in their former band together. This band still exists since they left but Cellar Darling prove, they are neither a copy nor clone…

by Friend X Isn’t it the Maschinist who gets an engine running, who ignites the initial spark? Heldmaschine had a support band that could not have been any better, they had their own “Maschinist”! As many of the fans have known Heldmaschine personally and followed ever since, the family reunion could begin. This being said, it was a funny side fact that the venue “Musiktheater Rex” in Bensheim is sited in former factory hall, perfect for these two Industrial bands. The Early Years It has been quite a while ago that I watched Heldmaschine so I was very curious…

Text and photos by Friend X, photos edited by Ms Cesar Little. Tate? – Tate? – Tate?  What comes in mind when you first hear this name? To the older ones amongst us, it might be Sharon T a t e, the murdered wife of Polish director Roman Polanski… To those amongst us, who are interested in art and paintings, the T a t e Gallery of Modern Art would come in mind … Well, this was yesterday and some decades ago. There is another Tate coming up, as rising star in the music business. This Tate is Lauren, Lauren T a t e ! – And with her, she brings her band, Hands Off Gretel, and again wait,…

The Dark River Festival is a perfect setting for accidental interviews. The relaxed atmosphere invites to forget about schedules and duties in a conversation that simply happens as a mutually interesting topic meets an occasion. This pretty much explains how I met Tuomo Latvala, drummer of Omnium Gatherum and why it took him several attempts to pack his gear. Omnium Gatherum just ended their gig when, I come backstage and take a break of my own watching them packing their gear. One after another, the musicians take a moment of rest and a drink themselves, chat and then resolve packing.…

Text by  Friend X (and Ms Cesar Little), photos by Andreas Schieler Alice Cooper and his phenomenal band opened the German leg of ‚Ol Black Eyes Is Back‘ world tour in Mannheim (SAP Arena) supported by the Black Stone Cherry (in the European tour leg, but Halestorm” in the US) on September 11th. What’s the secret of the grandmaster of shock rock’s shows while his career exceeds the life span of most bands if not that of their musicians, too by now? The EP „Breadcrumps“ and the tour make his 50-years anniversary package. Whatever, you can always be sure about…

The Dark River Festival is the kymiest festival there is, they say. The venue near the Kymijoki is located in the Finnish Kymenlaakso which is as much the valley as the county. It is the only spot in the world the Dark River Festival (DRF) crew can think of to have this festival. I learned that this festival is really different (see interview with Henri Eerola). Bands love to return to the ‘kymiest’ stage and the ‘kymiest’ crew, said the musicians I asked. So do the fans.  What’s pulling not the moths to the light but the metalheads to the…

JINJER have been touring nearly continuously for two years. We have seen them rock the stages of festivals big and small, such as the most traditional midsummer festival in Finland Nummirock in 2017, the German Summer Breeze in 2018 or this year even in Wacken. At the moment they are touring Europe, hopping from one festival stage to a club stage and back. We visited their tour stop in Marburg lately, supported by Of Colours and Unprocessed. Of Colours – Warming Up The Hot-Summer-Night Crowd First support act was Frankfurt based „Of Colours” with a 30-minutes slot. They deliver…

Reporting from the Dark River Festival (DRF) 2018 had become a very intimate, inspiring and moving matter. The crew’s welcome, attention and even care for my concerns was touching. No need to mention that the line-up, crowd and course of events was no less than great. In a year in within that I am forced to focus on nothing but my most fragile health, it was one of the brightest moments when I learned that I would actually able to report from this very festival again! So here we go again, and return to the Dark River Festival. The Kymiest…
