Winter is coming. Frosty air bites your face, even the tiniest drop of humidity is stinging like a needle in your skin yet growing beautiful white crusts at your beards and eyelashes and breathing burns harshly in your throat. You walk on a lonely plane in the bitter cold of an Arctic night. Below the frozen snow is crushing under your feet and above you Northern lights seem to set the sky on fire. … while Hyrde (Antti Hyyrynen) and Pexi (Pekka Olkonen) are shredding the riffs of ‚Viisi Laukausta‘ deep into your guts. Into your guts? You open your…

Kaunis Kuolematon just released a very touching ballad “Palava maa”. They released a song completely different than any other song I have heard of them. Really, totally different? I met the band, the whole band, in summer during Nummirock festival in Finland. They announced that there would be a release later this year very different from what they usually do. And so I find myself in need to put their style into words. Genre. I am frowning. Because whenever I try to describe the music of Kaunis Kuolematon I „hear“ Olli (Suvanto), their vocalist, say: „He said, we’re doom!“ –…

Norský kult Satyricon je v českých zemí častým hostem, jak v pražských klubech, tak na Brutal Assaultu, kde patří mezi největší atrakce večerního programu. Říjnová zastávka turné k aktuální nahrávce „Deep Calleth Upon the Deep“ zamířila do pražského Paláce Akropolis ve společnosti kapel Fight the Fight a Suicidal Angels, to vše v péči Obscure Promotion. Plánovaný začátek už v 17:30 odskákala první jmenovaná předkapela, čerstvá HC/punková akvizice amerického labelu Metal Blade, kterou většina příchozích včetně mě zaregistrovala až postavající u stolku s mechem. Řečtí Suicidal Angels přivezli svou loňskou desku „Division of Blood“ a v Akropoli se představili ve výborném světle, podařilo se jim rozhýbat plnící se sál,…

The festival ended with a range of more than interesting gigs. Yet after another three nights in a row short in sleep and days crowded with information, music and meeting musicians and managers, I was simply too tired to attend everything I had planned. I am quite confident that Mastodon gave an impressive show without my attention. The weather had changed completely. It was warm, still windy and sun shone from a cloudless sky. It felt as if the sun was burning after the last days of rain and dark clouds. Good, old Udo Dirkschneider and his band shred the…

Now that was a long festival day! We started roughly at noon and returned home only after sunrise, literally. Blasting gigs, passionate interviewees, meeting lots of cool folks on the venue and all this free of rain. It feels hard to make a cut what to write and what not. Ok, the inteviews. There was a lot of input and some really intense conversations on bridging genres in music, an in-depth introduction of a very tradional instrument, its current rise in the music scene and how it is technically further developed – speaking with Pekko Käppi! There was a relaxed…

When I listened to this line of Omnium Gatherum’s „Rejuvenate!“ it stuck in my memory and popped up again and again from time to time. Just like this morning while taking a sighing look on today’s Tuska schedule. ‚Bull…‘ I thought. ‚There’ll be hardly a break not to think of break long enough to take meal anytime inbetween …‘ So I wondered on which criteria I would decide whom to see and whom not to attend. Whom only to give a short glance taking some photos and sparing some as it is. My particular inner conflict tonight would be -…

Finally: approaching Helsinki the very day the Heatseeker at Tavastia will start the Tuska Open Air marathon and this on a sunny day!!! After all the rain and cold of the Nummirock weekend, you might imagine this add remarkably to my excitement! The line up is amazing and we have spoken of that plenty of times. So let’s focus on what is coming for my dear obscuro readers. And this is very exclusive stuff because I managed to make several appointments with musicians based in or near Helsinki yet not being in the line up. Still there is so much…

Only two more days left before the gates to one of the most traditional clubs, the Tavastia, in Helsinki open for the Tuska warm up event, the Pre Party. Here we will see Antony Parviainen and his energetic Band Psychework again. And no doubt they will fuel the Helsinki party people as much as they did just a few days ago at Nummirock. Speaking of those bands we will see once more, I am also happy to get a second chance for a Vorna gig. Perhpas just one week ago I had said, what a pitty they just play at…

The final gig of Nummirock 2017 was played by the amazing and fantastic Insomnium.  And what a gig they played. I met them at the check in and the first thing they or more precisely Niilo asked: „What the hell are you doing here?“ relating to me being German and thereby being theoretically able to sit at home in the sun enjoying a hot summer day. But would I want to have missed Nummirock 2017? No! Certainly not. And replying to Niilo I said: „Well enjoying the wonderful Finnish summer and of course the most amazing line up here!“ At…

Moikka from the beautiful lake Nummijärvi, from sunny shores and flimmering heat …. Äh – no. Well, the lake is beautiful. And the sun is at least from time to time visible. And the flimmering heat, well … I haven’t found that yet. Also, travelling here was a bit of an adventure. First my luggage got lost and then also my company. While I found the first mentioned short after midnight at the airport, the other one was delivered by taxi around 2:30 am when I was finally asleep – yet not for long, as I had to pick her…
